Virginia Beach visitors and residents who want to visit several museums in the Hampton Roads area may want to consider the 7-4-1 Millennium Membership.

Virginia travelers who are visiting the Hampton Roads area will find many museums to delight family members of all ages. Travelers with children will want to check out the Children’s Museum of Virginia, Nauticus, the Virginia Living Museum and the Virginia Air & Space Center. The 7-4-1 Millennium Membership package includes all these museums and more.

7-4-1 Includes Many Hampton Roads Museums

The 7-4-1 Millennium Membership is a pass to visit seven museums in the Hampton Roads area. The pass can be purchased by Hampton Roads residents or visitors to the area. The cost of the package includes one year’s membership at all of the museums for the entire family as well as newsletters, discounts and special event notifications.

There are three membership levels and all three levels cost $200 before June 1, 2009. After June 1, 2009, the price increases to $240. The three levels include: Individual with three guests, Family with two adults and all dependent children in the household or Grandparents with two grandparents and up to three guests. The pass pays for itself quickly depending on the number of people in the family and number of museums visited.

Visit Portsmouth Museums, Nauticus and More

The Millennium package includes free unlimited exhibit admission at Virginia Air & Space Center, Nauticus, the Virginia Living Museum and all four Portsmouth Museums. Courthouse Galleries, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, Lightship Portsmouth Museum and the Children’s Museum of Virginia make up the Portsmouth Museums. Members receive all benefits for each museum.

  • Virginia Air & Space Center is also the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. The center offers exhibits such as the Apollo 12 Command Module that went to the moon, a DC-9 airplane, Wright Flyer replica and more. Members receive discount tickets to the IMAX movie theater.   • Virginia Living Museum offers exhibits with live animals and birds native to Virginia. The museum features a planetarium theater, touch tanks, an elevated lakeside boardwalk, native wildflower gardens, a 30,000-gallon Chesapeake Bay aquarium and more.   • Nauticus is the National Maritime Center. Nauticus offers hands-on maritime exhibits, naval history at the Hampton Roads History Museum and tours of ships docked at Nauticus International Pier. The battleship USS Wisconsin is berthed at Nauticus. For more information, call 757-664-1000.
  • Children’s Museum of Virginia has more than 80 interactive, hands-on exhibits for children of all ages. The museum also hosts a toy train collection and a planetarium. Call 757-393-5259.
  • Courthouse Galleries are located in Historic Olde Towne Portsmouth. The galleries offer rotating visual art exhibits, lectures, classes and performances. Call 757-393-8543 for information.
  • The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum is America’s oldest and largest naval shipyard. Explore naval history from the Revolutionary War era and beyond with ship models, artifacts and exhibits. Hours of operation change with days of the week and seasons. Call 757-393-8591.
  • The Lightship Portsmouth Museum is a museum in what was once a working lightship. Lightships were navigational aids similar to lighthouses, except the ships could be moved to where they were needed. The Lightship Portsmouth Museum has exhibits with artifacts, uniforms, photographs, models and more. Hours of operation are seasonal, call 757-393-8591 for information.

Membership in Children’s Museums and the ASTC Passport Program

The 7-4-1 Millennium Membership package includes more than just membership in the seven museums included in the package. Millennium Membership provides free general admission to more than 100 participating children’s museums across the United States with a reciprocal program. Hampton Roads visitors can use the pass when they go home and area residents can use the pass when they travel. Some restrictions apply and the number of visitors who receive free admittance may vary by location.

The 7-4-1 package also includes free general admission to more than 300 science centers and museums through the ASTC Passport Program. Local restrictions apply but frequent travelers may find there are many more museum doors open to them with the Millennium Membership.

In addition to museum memberships, the Millennium Membership offers discounts to Seven Venues shows at Attucks Theatre, Chrysler Hall, Harbor Park, Harrison Opera House, Prism Theatre at Scope Arena, Norfolk Scope Arena and Wells Theatre.

Virginia travelers to the Hampton Roads area may find the 7-4-1 Millennium Membership offers an exciting array of choices for families.
