Day trippers looking for a fun and enjoyable outdoor experience may want to pack a lunch and visit Three Fox Vineyards.
The friendly owners of Three Fox Vineyards, John and Holli Todhunter, invite visitors to bring a picnic lunch, purchase a bottle of wine and enjoy it near bubbling Crooked Run Creek that runs through the property. Picnic tables are available near the creek. Visitors may want to add a blanket to their picnic basket. The brick patio offers another delightful area to enjoy a glass of wine. Three Fox NameWhile still in the process of deciding upon purchasing the property, John and Holli saw three foxes on the property. That prompted the name Three Fox Vineyards and the Todhunters have made use of the name in numerous ways. At the entrance to the driveway, three fox statues welcome visitors to the winery. In the tasting room, visitors will notice an unusual chandelier with foxes decorating it. One wall of the tasting room displays a painting of foxes playing in a field of hay. Statues of foxes dressed in clothes with hats and walking sticks as if on their way to a party add to the fun nature of the tasting area. Two Virginia Wine TrailsThree Fox Vineyards belongs to two wine trails. The Fauquier Wine Trail consists of 18 wineries. The General’s Wine and History Trail recently formed in 2009. This new wine trail offers a passport program called “Campaign Journal” that issues military style orders. By following the passport, visitors learn about the wines offered at each of the 10 participating wineries and also learn about the Civil War history of the area. After completion, the journal may be turned in and random drawings for prizes will take place. Events at WineryThree Fox Vineyards offers an array of events throughout the year. Included in the selection are the Annual Blessing of the Harvest in September, Annual Lucy Stomp and Twilight in Tuscany. Visit the winery’s website to discover more events. The winery offers wine enthusiasts the opportunity to sponsor a wine tasting session in their own home or office. This is a great way to learn about wine and leave the responsibility to the winery. Three Fox will gently guide those participating in the tasting to discover more about wine. History of Three Fox VineyardsThe Todhunters visited Tuscany, fell in love with the area and yearned to create a similar experience in the United States. Upon finding this piece of property in Virginia that reminded them of Tuscany, they decided to begin the adventure and hard work of creating their own winery. In 2009, the winery is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Wines and VineyardsThe vineyards on the 50-acre estate include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. These beautiful vineyards are meticulously maintained. White wines produced by Three Fox Vineyards include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Gatto Bianco (a blend of Chardonnay and Viognier), Viognier and Vidal Blanc. Red wines include Sangiovese, Maestro (a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin), Cabernet Franc, Nebbiolo and Chambourcin. Vintner’s Circle ClubAt Three Fox Vineyards, the Todhunters created an unusual but excellent club for their members. For a yearly fee, members can sponsor and care for five grapevines. Members have their names on plaques next to their panel of grapes. Participants receive guidance in caring for the vines. Vintner’s Circle offers numerous benefits including free wine tasting and 20% off merchandise. For those who need to travel further from home, they may want to look for area lodging and restaurants.
