There are a number of types of accommodations for a visitor on Chincoteague and it can be hard to decide. Each one serves guests with different needs and interests.

As the main industry of the small Chincoteague Island off of the coast of Virginia is tourism there are several different kinds of places to stay. These all vary based on time of year, what sort of guests are visiting, how much they want to spend, and what they hope to get out of their vacation. It can be daunting to decide on the best place to stay, especially when confronted by dozens of choices. “Hotel, rental house, or camping? Which hotel? Which campground? How much can we afford?” are all questions that are taken into consideration by tourists. A vacation should be fun and stress free. A tourist shouldn’t have to worry about finding the ideal place to sleep.

Hotels on Chincoteague Island

There are eighteen hotels on Chincoteague island, all ranging in size and location. For tourists who want to be closest to the beach, the Refuge Inn is a good bet. It has an indoor pool for the kids, a hot tub for the adults, and an observation deck for the stargazer. It even has a paddock with its own Chincoteague Ponies that can be fed by guests. The Inn also offers bike rentals and has a little gift shop. On the main beach road guests can get a more downtown feel from the Quality Inn, which is pet friendly and boasts a pool and outdoor grills. For tourists looking for luxury, the Payton Place Bayside Suites is a good bet. Payton Place has spacious suites with kitchenettes and a deck overlooking the bay. They also have a private pier for guests. For visitors looking for something in the middle, there are still over a dozen more hotels to choose from!

Chincoteague Bed and Breakfasts

For a little more down-home feel guests can also stay at some of the island Bed and Breakfasts. Most of them are clustered right on Main Street into Downtown Chincoteague, close to the theatre, shops, restaurants, and a park overlooking the water. Each one is a great little spot to stay for guests who want something smaller than a hotel, but also want to be pampered with breakfasts and luxury. Among the island Bed and Breakfasts is Miss Molly’s Inn where Marguerite Henry wrote the famous book Misty of Chincoteague.

Where to Camp on Chincoteague

Some tourists don’t even want to stay under a roof at all and Chincoteague provides for them as well. There are four campgrounds, all with different amenities to suit guests. The Inlet View Campground has a boat launch and their own private clamming area for guests. At Tom’s Cove Campground guests can fish from the piers, get a video game fix in the clubhouse, and shop in the country store for souvenirs and necessities. The Maddox Family Campground features a duck pond, a store, and bath houses. And nestled away from it all in the middle of Chincoteague lies the Pine Grove Campground with a bird sanctuary, perfect for bird watchers!

Rental Cottages and Condos on Chincoteague

And of course, for the tourist who wants a home away from home, Chincoteague has a huge selection of rentals. There are large, grand houses that can go for as much as $2000 a week during the summer season. Then there are little one-bedroom cottages for just $200. Visitors will also find every size and price in-between. Many are pet friendly and some even have maid service. Guests can choose from waterfront, water view, or downtown homes scattered all over the island. There are also rental condos and little clusters of cottages for multiple families traveling together. Visitors interested in renting for their trip should look at the different choices carefully. Unlike hotels these rental units have specific days of the week to check in/out and different trip lengths, from two-night to full week stays. The rental homes also all have different amenities such as phones, outdoor showers, televisions, internet access, and washer/dryer. Renters should be careful to make sure that they get exactly what they need for their trip.

A Home Away From Home

Wherever a tourist chooses to stay on Chincoteague, they will get to experience a peaceful vacation on an island with something for everybody. Even the different accommodation choices suit just about every need and desire a tourist could have. Whether they want to be right downtown or tucked away in a pine grove, on the water or by the stores, somewhere cozy or spacious, Chincoteague Island has it all.
