Fall is a wonderful time of year with the beautiful scenery and the fun of picking apples. Virginia has many places to go apple picking along with a lot of Fall events.

There are so many awesome places to go in Virginia to visit apple orchards. There is no way to possibly list them all. In the Fall, the apple orchards and surrounding countryside are just gorgeous. There are a number of places you can pick your own apples and enjoy several Fall festivals.

Central Virginia Apple Orchards

Lovingston, VA: September 27-28, 2008, there is a terrific Apple Harvest and Apple Butter Festival at Drumheller’s Orchard. You can participate in a hayride that takes you through the apple orchard to the pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own pumpkin. Plus, there is a 5-acre corn maze that is very popular at this location. They have an apple sling-shot game and a large selection of apples, as well as fresh cider, honey, hams, food, live country music, crafts, and food. There is sure to be a good time had by all who attend.

Charlottesville, VA: October 4-5, 2008, they are having an Apple Festival at the Carter Mountain Orchard. You can pick your own apples and listen to bluegrass music while enjoying the beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the biggest celebration of the year in this part of Virginia. They also have hayrides, crafts, delicious made-to-order food, a country store, and a scrumptious bakery. And don’t forget the apples, apples, and more apples! Carter Mountain Orchard is open all year round, to pick not only apples, but also peaches when in season.

Other Central Virginia Fall Festivals

  • The Amherst County Apple Festival is on October 18-19, 2008. Everything apples and a huge craft show.
  • The Bedford Apple Harvest Festival at Gross’ Orchard is on October 18, 2008. You can pick apples, play games, go on rides, and more.
  • Roseland lets you come out between October 11-26, 2008, to pick your own Fuji, Rome, Winesap, and 10 more varieties of apples at the Dickie Brothers Orchard.

Northern Virginia Apple Orchards

Leeds, VA: On September 13, 2008, drop on by the Stribling Orchard Applefest. Pick your own apples. Plus they have a craft show and live bluegrass music. You can also buy some fresh baked goodies.

Shenandoah Valley Apple Orchards

Winchester, VA: On September 20-21, 2008, enjoy the Winchester Rotary Apple Harvest Festival. It features over 180 Arts and Crafts vendors, an apple pie contest, apple butter making, and more. There are lots of fun and food in apple country.

Also in Winchester at High Hill Farm you can listen to bluegrass music, take a hayride to the pumpkin patch, or go through the maze. There is delicious homemade food and, of course, you can pick your own apples. There are farm animals for the kids to enjoy. They are open every weekend from mid-September through October 31st. They also have a haunted house and antiques and collectibles for sale each weekend. Go and enjoy the wonderful food they make from their own farm.

Celebrate the apple harvest at Mt. Jackson Apple & Grape Harvest Festival on October 11-12, 2008. Enjoy the very quaint little town with food (apples of course), crafts, and music.

  • The Marker Miller Apple Festival in Winchester on October 11-13, 2008.
  • The Richard Apple Harvest Festival is held in Middletown on October 18-19, 2008.

Blue Ridge Highlands Apple Orchards

Visit the Chilhowie Apple Festival. Besides all the wonderful apples there is a parade, arts and crafts, and even a pet show. They also have live entertainment. This apple festival is from September 26-28, 2008.

As you can see, Virginia is full of apples and apple festivals. Virginians take pride in the apples they grow. Take the time to relax and enjoy one of these festivals this Fall with your family.
