Here are three to get you started. WilliamsburgNo other vacation spot offers more free attractions than Williamsburg. One can sightsee in Colonial Williamsburg free of charge. Beyond sightseeing, any visitor to Colonial Williamsburg can view the daily historical reenactments for free as well. Across the street from Colonial Williamsburg lies The College of William and Mary. The College offers free tours of its colonial grounds and lends its campus to sightseers for no charge. Drive down the Colonial Parkway along the James River and find Williamsburg’s sandy public access beaches. Stop off and have a picnic with the family or your lover. Southwest VirginiaNo other region in the Commonwealth of Virginia offers more culture and variety than Southwest Virginia. Spend a weekend in Roanoke, the Star City, and enjoy Downtown Roanoke’s fine dining, museums, and vibrant night life. Travel farther South on Interstate 81 and you will head into the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Take a drive on Virginia’s scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Charlottesville is a college town, home to Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia. Be sure to check out UVA’s beautiful campus. Another family favorite is Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, also located in Charlottesville. Arrive early, as the lines at Monticello have been known to stretch for a long way in the spring and summer months. Charlottesville also boasts several art museums and coffee shops for the intellectual in the family. Be sure to leave your lunchbox at home and enjoy the great dining Charlottesville has to offer.
